It seems that I recall a vet (Dr. Heller?) on this list saying that
distemper vacs PROBABLY are not necessary after five consecutive years,
based on some preliminary titer studies.

**Wasn't me. Even before Mongo's death, I stopped vaccinating my personal
ferrets after three years old, and although I would vaccinate client owned
animals after that, it was only following a discussion regarding the risks of a
reaction vs exposure to the disease. Currently, I am vaccinating kits, then
doing annual titers and only revaccinating those with low titers.

That said, there is NO study existing proving protection over a year with
Purevax, and the only study using Galaxy D only went for 21 days after
vaccination. So, legally, I have to tell people that the only proven duration of
protection is a year with Purevax. Also, there is NO study proving what level of
titer is protective in ferrets, although the studies done so far in several
species seem to show a similar level to be protective in each species so far
studied, and we can cautiously extrapolate from that.

Would I vaccinate a seven year old ferret? Only under extreme duress, in a
situation where there was likely to be a high chance of exposure to distemper.

Dr. Ruth
