Yes, it can be used, and per the info from the 2008 IFC Symposium a
capsule of Metamucil equals a tablespoon of pumpkin. See, Barb and
Ruth, I really WAS listening and taking notes! I don;t know how much
is in a capsule but you can look at the store or at the website, i
guess:

I know that it is also used by vets for some poisoning situations,
having encountered it in an ASPCA Animal Poisoning Control Center
article on ferret toxicoses
