My recent adoptee had a distemper vaccination. She received the
Benadryl injection prophylactically (but not the Dex) and still had a
delayed reaction. Xmas Day was spent dealing with this reaction
(extreme lethargy/passing frank blood). I would highly recommend the
Benadryl AND the Dex to prevent a reaction.

In terms of rabies vaccinations, in Canada it is not recommended every
year but every 3 years. I am less familiar with a reaction to the
rabies vaccination because my vet rarely vaccinates for rabies since
there has never been a recorded case of a ferret with rabies in this
part of Canada (Atlantic Coast). Clearly regional protocols vary.

better safe than sorry, and it sounds like he needs the shot for "legal"
purposes.
