Debbie,

=A0 I've had good success treating ferrets with diabetes with glargine insu=
lin and canned m/d diet.=A0 However, the first thing to do for your ferret =
is test a urine sample for infection and the presence of ketones.=A0 If she=
has ketones, she should be hospitalized on fluids to flush the toxins out =
of her system and get her regulated using IV regular insulin.

My 3 1/3 year old male Pippin woke up yesterday very weak and unable
to walk, we took him to our vet and blood was sent away as nothing was
apparent upon exam, no fever.
Pippin has always been healthy with no previous problems.
The vet just called to say his blood sugar was over 580 and that the
prognosis isnt good. He is waiting on a call from a specialist as to
whats best to do for Pippin.
I have read the archives but wasnt able to come up with anything
helpful in this case.
Spontaneous diabetes in a ferret is rare he said and so there isnt
much info available as to treatment.
If anyone has any info to help us with Pippin I would be very grateful.
