Hello,

My Rocky is pretty ill. I've had him since the fall of 2004, he was a
dog pound rescue, best guess at his age is between 6-7 years. He's a
bilateral adrenalectomy and he had his spleen removed this summer
with a huge nodule on it that looked ready to burst. He gets no
regular meds.

He's had a slight cough on and off for months. In the last few weeks
he's gotten very weak and wobbly, but still eating and voiding well
and the cough disappeared. Tuesday he seemed to be having difficulty
breathing, he was taking short labored breaths and couldn't get
around. Today we went to the vet, I guessed heart disease and she
took an xray. His chest cavity was so filled with fluid that she
couldn't see his heart on the film. She didn't want to drain the
fluid by needle because she felt he'd pass from the stress. She kept
him all day in an oxygen tent and he got two injections of Lasix.

When I picked him up tonight he was bright, alert and still eating
like a pig. His breathing isn't labored at all now and so barely
obvious that I keep checking him to see if he is still breathing.
He's still weak and pees on himself. He got a script of enalapril
(0.8 MG/ML) of which he's to have .5 ML once a day. Every once in
awhile he picks his head up and pants for maybe 3 seconds, then goes
back to normal. His respiration seems fast, I counted 95 breaths in a
minutes time.

What do I need to watch for? Are these bouts of panting something to
be concerned about? His color is good, appetites good. He has been
shivering quite a bit for the past week. I've had him on 2MG of
Melatonin for 2 months, he's just started to regrow his fur. Should I
discontinue the Melatonin until his heart condition stabilizes?

Any advice, suggestions, etc is welcomed :-)

Leslie
