Subject: [ferrethealth] Ripper: Odd crust or overgrowth of skin on back paw pads
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I noticed today that Ripper seems to have an odd overgrowth of skin on
his back paw pads. I have done my best to take photos and have posted
them in an album with Ripper's name in the photos section of the
group. When I look closely, it looks like the overgrowth is made up
of little rectangular blocks of skin that have hardened, and are
shaped on the non-paw-end to mimic the natural shape of the paw pad.

I can break off parts of the hardened skin by pinching them between my
fingernails, and that doesn't seem to hurt Ripper. The skin on the
paw pads is rather crusty-looking overall.

His nose is fine - no crust there. He is current on distemper
vaccine, so I don't think that's it. The other 2 ferrets in the
house, including the one he's been repeatedly boarded with at the
vet's, have perfectly smooth and normal paw pads.

(possibly) Related health issues: Ripper did have adrenal surgery in
August. It appeared that he only had one gland, and that gland was
removed. We had him on pred for a few months (through November) to
keep him from having an Addison's crisis. He's started excessively
grooming the other ferrets, me, and the vet tech in the last two
weeks, so he just got a lupron shot and melatonin implant this week at
the vet's. His fur has never really come back since the surgery, and
obviously, he has 'rat tail'. There have been periodic episodes of
that orange crusty stuff on his skin, but since the adrenal surgery,
those have mostly cleared up.

If anyone has any thoughts, I would appreciate hearing them. We are
moving in 2 weeks, and will have to change vets, etc., so if possible
I'd like to get this addressed sooner rather than later. THanks in
advance!
