Subject: [ferrethealth] help for this active ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
hello,
I'm told you are the most knowledgeable ferret specialists in the country a=
nd I have very serious question.
=A0
This is the situation, we have a 3lb ferret who is very active, goes outsid=
e everyday weather permits, and runs a 2 1/2 acre lot on all surfaces: dirt=
, rock, downed trees, concrete, blacktop, lawn and woods.
=A0
He had surgery in Nov. which was successful, but, as a result of the i.v. h=
is lymph gland to that arm shut down. The resulting cellulitis shut off cir=
culation to the arm. he lost some flesh, 80% of the skin from the elbow dow=
n, some muscle, his foot pads and all toes had to be amputated.
=A0
We are in the process of regrowing skin. He has about 33% regrowth at this =
time, tissue on the bottom of his palm but no pads and 2 of the carpal bone=
s are protruding. About 40% more growth of skin is ready to start.
=A0
He has muscle use of his upper arm to=A0 lower forearm and is very active i=
n the house, taking small trips outside with his wrap protected with paddin=
g and waterproofing.
=A0
When the skin regrowth is complete we will then face the next issue:=A0 wit=
h only skin and no pads we are afraid he will constantly have irritation/ru=
bbing from the inside out, possibly having sore spots(sorry i don't know th=
e proper name/term) under his skin and maybe thru the skin.
=A0
Question: is it possible to do and will a ferret tolerate a silicone- our f=
irst choice because it is easily removed, or a polyethelene, or a teflon, o=
r a gortex implant to replace his pads so he can resume his normal activiti=
es?
=A0
Even though this situation is unknown territory to my vet, he is very open =
to the possibilty of performing this procedure if it would benefit the ferr=
et, that implants have been done successfully on animals. He says informati=
on is scarce and would need information/procedural resources.
=A0
I hope there is help for Avenger, and you can guide us to it.
Many thanks, kathy
