Subject: [ferrethealth] Any Risks in giving Lupron to non-adrenal ferret?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

This is about Smokey again (who is still overall fine).

I tried looking in the archives, and my guess is not really (he is a
neutered male, I can see how we wouldn't want to give it to a
breeding male...) but I didn't find anything that said there was
minimal or no risk, just a lot of posts discussing using it
prophylactically as well as an alternative to surgery.

The vet we had visited at first didn't want to give him anything
without a confirmed Dx, and I kind of feel like I pushed the issue
and he gave Smoke the shot, and of course now I am seccond guessing
myself, so if there are any risks, I guess I'd like to hear what they
are so I know what to look for!

(one real drawback I can think of is if we wanted to try the TN
panel, it would have to wait until the lupron is out of his system,
right?).

He also said they would not consider doing the surgery without
imaging done first to "confirm" adrenal disease, which I don't
exactly understand, as he also said there was a real chance that the
tumor would be contained within the gland and thus not observable
with the imaging tools available.

Sooo... since he (still) isn't exactly sick, and has had the lupron
injection, (and if there isn't a down-side I guess I'll keep him on
it until I figure out what is reasonable, although it would only take
6 mos of Lupron tx to equal one round of imaging...) We know to look
for straining to urinate as an emergency situation, but for moving
on, I think this vet has reached an impasse.

Does the group thing it's unreasonable to look for a vet to do the
adrenal sx/exploratory without the additional expense of the imaging
and Dx attempts?

I'm again grateful for the advice,
-Hillary
