Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Any Risks in giving Lupron to non-adrenal ferret?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Hillary,

My vet and the one he and I consult with in the U.S. do not think there
is any harm in giving a ferret a Lupron Depot injection. The rationale
is that if the ferret is not adrenal the Lupron will not make any
difference to the clinical symptoms, such as hair loss, aggression, etc.
Whereas, if the ferret has adrenal disease the Lupron should ameliorate
the clinical symptoms. In fact my vet is undertaking a program to treat
young ferrets with Lupron Depot seasonally as phrophylaxis.

In terms of ultrasound, my understanding is that it is not a definitive
diagnostic tool for adrenal disease. And even in advanced disease can
be inaccurate. My 2 year-old gib had ultrasound done before his adrenal
surgery and the ultrasound did not show any abnormality in his adrenals.
He ended up having his right adrenal removed because it 'looked'
abnormal when the veterinary surgeon actually saw it during the surgery.

I think the skill and experience of the radiologist doing the ultrasound
is crucial. One vet advised me that unless the radiologist regularly
sees ferrets and has done several hundred ultrasounds of ferrets, she
would not trust the results to be accurate. Of note the board certified
radiologist who ultrasounded my gib, had only done one other ultrasound
on a ferret. His first was one of my other ferrets - results were
inconclusive for her as well.
