Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: anabolic hormones adrenal ferrets?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Wendy
Anabolic steroids like Winstrol-V were recommended
for dogs and cats with chronic kidney failure to help
with the muscle wasting, etc., but it is no longer
recommended. If the anemia is mild then simply using
a vitamin/mineral (B vitamins/iron) supplement such as
Pet Tinic may be helpful. If the anemia is moderate to
severe then Epogen or Procrit can be used to treat the
anemia. Likewise using a lower protein diet, fish oil,
and potassium citrate may help treat the kidney problem.
Some even recommend using benazepril to help treat
kidney failure. However anabolic steroids are no longer
recommended.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
