Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: 18 mo old with possible neck injury - help needed
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Injuries to nerves can repair *pretty* often on their
own if given enough time. Shortly before his death
Christopher Reeve was getting some sensory progress.
I've twice had neural problems, once affecting my upper
limbs, and some other nearby areas, and a second time
affecting my feet and ankles which had a cumulative
effect with some birth malformations. Both times what
I most needed was some bracing, a lot of PT, and enough
time. The first time I had sensation return to my hands
about 3 years after onset. So, time, time, time...

Ferrets can be the same way, even with a central nervous
system injury at times. Spot threw a clot to his brain due
to kidney disease and was found comatose, a condition
which lasted a few days (so he had round the clock medical
care with days at the local vet hospital and nights are the
emergency vet hospital. When he finally came around he
needed a lot of work with range of motion, sling therapy:

and we monitored for sensory recovery, too.

He wound up mostly recovering. One foot had impaired
sensation and movement but not enough that he couldn't
figure out ways to still live fully with it, given the chance.

It is always important with neurological damage to realize
what a difference time can make as long as the flexibility
and muscle tone can be retained. Yes, there certainly can
be damage that is too great, but if it isn't then it is important
to try to keep hope even over months with ferrets and years
with humans, and important to keep doing the needed PT.
