Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: 18 mo old with possible neck injury - necropsy results
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Just in case you were following along, I wanted to let you know that it
looks like Siouxsie died of a condition similar to wobblers, which
dobermans tend to get. Her 6th vertebrae was deteriorating on the
right side. My vet excised the vertebrae and sent it off for
pathology. Her bladder had some bruising, but other than that her
insides were clean and healthy. He thinks her breathing noise was a
sign of the pain she as in.

So I would be curious if anyone has experienced or heard of a ferret
getting "wobblers disease". Since I don't get on this group very
often, please email me off list if you have any thoughts on the
subject. I know what I'm going to be researching this weekend...

Thanks again for all the well wishes. I'm comforted that she went
relatively quickly and there was nothing more I could have done.

Kerry

[Moderator's Note:
Wobblers may be a genetic problem. I recall it coming up in a
program on dog genetics.
http://www.articlesbase.com/pets-articles/what-is-wobblers-syndrome-627940.html
includes
>Wobblers Syndrome is a neurological disorder that affects
>several large breed dogs...
>The medical term for Wobblers is Cervical Spondylopathy
>or Cervical Vertebral Instability or CVI. It is caused by a
>narrowing or malformation of the cervical vertebrae. The

>and also to nutrition.

The FHL Archives
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/
and PubMed
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez
searching with terms like
spondylopathy ferret
may prove useful
Chordoma can appear there but I wonder if it would look
like that, ditto some other malignancies of that area. T-
cell lymphoma has appeared in spinal bone in a ferret if
you search in PubMed]
