G'day,

Why licking your wounds could be good for you may be due to
bacteriophages. Bacteriophages are viruses which infect bacteria and
most bacteria have their own nemesis in the form of a virus. In the
mouth are myriads of organisms including bacteria. Licking might just
transfer the right bacteriophage to take care of an infection.

In some countries, in particular Georgia, bacteriophages are used to
treat otherwise incurable antibiotic resistant infection, saving
limbs and lives. (not by licking but a more sophisticated process)
The treatment is called 'phage therapy'.
