Hey MC---

For just getting that eye open and cleaned up, I've used saline
solution and a warm washcloth. I've used the saline that I do for my
contacts (no extra stuff in it).

If it's just a one time thing (got a hair in the eye before going to
sleep and it got yucky), then getting the crud off will be helpful.
There's a chance that whatever irritated the eye may have caused
an "ulcer" of the cornea. If you can get your kid to the vet, they'll
prescribe an optical antibiotic to make sure the eye heals quickly.

I don't know of anything over the counter that would work like that.

[Moderator's Note:
be very careful because some contact solutions and
some "get the red out" or "tired eye" drops contain
more than just saline solution.

Ophthalmic saline solution is affordable and can be
gotten in pharmacies and even some grocery stores,
and we've had a veterinary ophthalmologist have us
use that for a ferret.]
