If I might contribute a bit of info to the FHL...
Wood pellets, hard or softwood (pine) are perfectly safe for ferret (and
small animal) use. I have been using them for over 25 years as litter for
my little companions...and my babies enjoy a very long life with little
ailments. IN fact, Rudi's punctured eye is the first major issue I have had
in 7 years now.....BTW..Thanks to Sukie and the FHL for their
advice......Little guy saw the vet today, is getting Amoxi (Much to his
displeasure....) and a warm pack on his eye, 3 times a day...he definitely
does not like that!
In order to pelletize the wood sawdust, the sawdust is soaked in a water
solution then heated to an extremely high temperature...300 degrees is what
I have heard....the extruded under high pressure through the pellet sizing
die.
The high temperature removes all the volatile esters that are so dangerous
to small critters.
So..if all you can find are soft wood pellets, do not be alarmed...they are
ok to use.
