The new protocol is Biaxin (Clarithromycin) and Amoxicillin.
"A recently published protocol for treating ferrets is a combination
of Clarithromycin (Biaxin) at 50 mg/kg once daily, and amoxicillin at
35 mg/kg once daily, or 20 mg/kg twice daily. This therapy is only
continued for two weeks....Other antibiotics, such as
chloramphenicol, Baytril, gentamicin, or sulfa drugs such as DiTrim
are of no use in this condition."
See: http://www.miamiferret.org/fhc/helicobacter.htm
This is the protocol I have used with the 4 ferrets I have treated
for helicobacter infections, one which was severe (i.e., vomiting
blood).
It is far, far easier than trying to get them to ingest the
Metronidazole. I simply mix the Amoxi and Biaxin in with a little
bit of duck soup (A/D combined with chicken baby food and water) and
a few drops of Ferretone. Bowl is licked clean every time and then I
give them the rest of their duck soup. No need to syringe.
Remember to pre-dose with sulcrafate/carafate a half hour before.
