Subject: [ferrethealth] insulinoma & neurological damage??
To: "ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com" <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Hello,

I wrote two weeks ago about my Rocky who was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, then we discovered he also had insulinoma.

He has been doing very well on the heart meds and pediapred, until this morning. I always feed him ground turkey prior to giving him any meds, especially his pred. This morning he crashed badly (blood glucose below 20) and was comatose for about an hour, the time it took me to get him to the vet. His blood pressure was so low she wasn't able to give him an IV and instead injected him with dextrose in the jugular.

Rocky came around and I left him there for the day so they could monitor him. His appetite was good, as usual, nothing takes him off his feed. When I returned at 6:30 to pick him up, he was eating again. The vet tech thinks he's lost his sight, and he was pedaling his back feet. Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot in time with a twitch in his abdomen. Each time he'd twitch, almost like a hiccough, he'd alternately pickup one rear foot then the next, over and over. The doctor is stumped. It doesn't appear to bother Rocky, but he was tired and finally fell asleep, twitching.

I have him home now and the twitching has lessened. He ate, again, and I gave him his pediapred, digoxin and furosemide (sp??) and now he's back to sleep. The doctor gave me some valium in case the twitching worsens but cautioned to only use it if necessary because of his heart.

Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this twitching? It doesn't affect his front legs, just his abdomen and rear legs. He really doesn't appear bothered by it at all but of course I'm concerned if there's some permanent damage.

Leslie
