Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: insulinoma and neurologic disease
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I've had a few with site loss when in a severe hypoglycemic episode -
they later regained their site. Our vet said the loss of site can be
due to inflammation in the brain. Mazy took 3 weeks to regain her site
but it came back completely. She also lost her walking ability. That
also returned to normal. It took us a month to get her stabilized, she
was on both pediapred and dexamethasone, the dex once each evening and
the pediapred twice a day. She also was fed recipe several times a day
She did finally stabilize though and stayed with us for awhile longer.

I've had two others that lost their site and had neurological effects
from hypoglycemic episodes. They all regained site and mobility.
Everyone has done better with the steroids and multiple daily recipe
feedings.

KitKat has survived a year after a major episode (it wasn't low glucose)
and was left with permanent neurological effects. She still has to
circle to get anywhere, but her site came back and her circles have
widened. She adapted well to her condition and is a seems to be a
relaxed and comfortable oldster. When it's time for recipe I wake her
and put her near the saucer if she's not up yet, she does her large
circle and if she doesn't come back to the right spot to eat she
circles again. She can walk the entire length of the hallway, circling
about halfway down. She's not much of a snuggler with the others but
she will occassionally sleep in the floor hammock with whoever climbs
in after her. I'm guessing because her motor skills are compromised
she prefers to sleep alone (can't easily get out from under another).
KitKat does well on dexamethasone once each evening and 3-4 recipe
feedings a day.
