For those who have been following the thread about taurine in various
meats this might be interesting, cross posted with permission.
There's a small bit about taurine in Fox's 'Biology and Diseases of the
Ferret' (see this link: Fox J. Biology and Diseases of the Ferret
'Although many mammals, including ferrets, preferentially use taurine
for bile acid and xenobiotic conjugation, glycine can be used for
conjugation when taurine is in low supply. Cats are unable to conjugate
significant amounts of glycine with bile even when taurine is in short
supply and must use taurine exclusively for bile conjugation.'
Since ferrets seem to be able to substitute glycine for taurine in at
least some body functions, but cats can't, maybe the dietary taurine
requirements of cats aren't particularly relevant to ferrets?
