Hi Lucie,

Depot simply means a long-acting formulation of an injectable drug.
So a one-month depot releases over the course of a month, a three-
mongh depot releases over the course of three months, etc.

Once thawed it must be used immediately. If not reconstituted it can
be frozen.

It can be ordered from a veterinary compounding pharmacy and
reconstituted when needed or some vets order the human form, mix it
themselves and freeze it. Once reconstituted it must used
immediately or frozen immediately.

I'm not sure how long it lasts frozen, I think my vet said 3 months.
I had some on hand and kept it in my freezer if I needed it for an
emergency, for example a blockage, before Cannoli had his adrenal
surgery.

My vet as a rule uses the one-month, 100 mcg. depot. However, at my
request he has ordered in the three-month, 100 mcg/mth. depot from a
compounding pharmacy. I have been told that a large gib should be
started at 200 mcg./mth. The four-month depot generally comes in an
even larger monthly dose. The higher the dose, the higher the cost.
Although the four-month depot is less expensive than four one-month
depots at a comparable monthly dosage.

500 mcg/month as a prophylactic seems like a really high dose if you
consider, as mentioned earlier, that a large gib with adrenal disease
is generally started at 200 mcg/month.

You should be able to order it from a compounding pharmacy, like the
Professional Arts Pharmacy in the dose and depot you want without
having to worry about what to do with the extra. How large a dose
would depend on what is working for that particular ferret. Some
ferrets respond very well at a low dose - others require a higher
dose. A dose that worked well for one ferret may not work well for
another.
