Hi Kathy,

It sounds like she may have adrenal disease as well as the mass.

I have a ferret who underwent emergency surgery last week for an
abdominal mass. He was found to have a golf-ball size mass attached to
his spleen and the spleen was enlarged. Both spleen and tumor were
removed. I just received the pathology results back today and the tumor
is benign! However, if he hadn't had it removed it would have ruptured
and caused a bleed out.

Difficult call to make because of her age. However, given the symptoms
I would say that exploratory surgery is the best option at this time.
At least then your daughter will know for certain what she is dealing
with. Also if the spleen is affected without surgery there is risk of
rupture. However, if possible I would strongly recommend a ferret
knowledgeable surgeon who can also remove any diseased adrenals as well.

I would be prepared for bad news (i.e., lymphomsarcoma) and think ahead
of time what you want to do if that is the case.

It is major surgery for a senior, but a skilled and experienced surgeon
would know how best to proceed.

Best wishes for a positive outcome.

Tressie
