Well, if they were castrated, ask your vet if he or she put them on a
heating pad during/ after surgery to keep them warm, the heating pad may
have been too warm and burnt the skin. I've had this happen to 2 ferrets
but on the back and not such a huge area. But it generally looked the same
as your ferrets. If they were laying on the heating pad on their tummies
after the surgery...

I've uploaded some pictures of my Gremlin and Willow, with Willow I have
taken more photos to show how the sores developed. When Willow developed
the sores, my vet said that the heating pad was too hot (even though they
check it but it was obviously too hot for her) and when the skin turned red
they tried to cool it with cold water but it was too late. I was never told
with Gremlin but maybe the vet didn't notice.

Excellent point, and there have been reports years ago
to either the FHL or FML of ferrets who had burns from
rice socks used to keep them warm after surgery, too.]
