All great points, Sukie. I took my 6yr old Boo Boo in yesterday, and after
having a medical appointment just the day before for myself, I walked away,
as I always do, blown away by the lengths veterinarians will go to help an
animal. They give, imho, above and beyond what most human medical doctors
do for their patients. By comparison.... well, as I said, I'm always amazed
how hard they work to get to the bottom of such complex symptoms and issues
that animals have, especially ferrets.

Most of the time when someone states that they are considering a ferret
"because they are so cute!" I try to let them know right off that they are
expensive to have, very high maintenance, and they are not for everyone. If
possible, I make it clear that it's not a matter of "IF" but a matter of
"WHEN" where ferrets and illness is concerned.

I know of one individual who lost both of her ferrets to insulinoma that
went untreated. After people helped her, because she claimed she couldn't
afford vet care, meds, etc.... both of her babies died. Shortly after,
about a month, she turned around and bought two more. I simply do not
understand.

I agree with the weekly or monthly savings idea. Makes better sense to plan
for a medical emergency than to blame veterinarians for the cost of their
services.
