You probably get a reduced rate due to your
animal rescue and rehab work, Kat.
Even with having gotten reduced rates on
and off I know we personally typically spend
about $5,000 over the lifetime for our usual
ferrets, and we've had one whose vet care in
his shortened (6 year) lifespan added up to
about $11,500 because he had multiple
deformations that created special medical
needs. He was our most expensive, but I
know of two people who had pacemakers
put into male ferrets who spent about
double that for those needs. So, those situations
do happen.
Areas of the nation with lower other costs
will have lower veterinary casts. For example,
the small house my father had in Holiday, Florida
which we are selling is the SAME size as our condo
and works out to have about as much associated
land. It is slightly below $60,000 (agreed) whereas
our condo's reduced reassessment is over a quarter
million and it certainly is NOT fancy, and our own
property taxes are 4 times those of the Florida
home. We need to be here, but you can see how
we could survive on much less if we retired and wound
up in the Florida house. It's the same for any business;
the prices charged are lower if the costs are lower
and employees need to earn more where costs are
higher, so if something as basic as land costs are low
then everything else can be, too.
(I don't know the typical home costs where you are,
but around here free standing homes begin at over
a half million -- that is the small ones on small lots.
I've seen $300,000 homes in Florida that would run
about 2 million here if exactly the same except for
location. So, you may also be seeing a regional costs
effect, as we all do. I don't know.)
