Katharine, I'm not certain how this figure was *averaged*, but I would imagine it would have to be only from ferrets that are actually seen by vets nationwide.

Here in my area, a simple adrenal surgery runs around $800. This includes pre-op CBC, overnight care, pain management meds, antibiotics.
Any complications can take that much higher.

One of my ferrets had a cancerous ear tumor.
To try and remove that a ear ablation was done by a surgical specialist here.
That was around $2000 *with* a discount as this was the first ferret he had performed this type of surgery on.

After hour/emergencies are at least 3 times the normal vet visit in our area.

I know folks that travel here to see my vet because the same procedure in their area is more than twice the cost.

We also are within distance of a great teaching hospital, UC Davis
I've not personally had to take a ferret there, but did take my dog.

He is not yet 6 years old, and to date his vet bills are approaching $20, 000.

Next time I see my vet I will ask how the figure was compiled.
