Subject: [ferrethealth] half dose distemper
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I had four ferrets at the same time go into shock at the vet when we
had them in for distemper vaccines. It was found that we had gotten a
bad bottle of vaccine, but it didn't make me feel better. My little
buddies were all from different families and different ages, yet all
went into shock at the same time. I thank my stars for my vet and her
staff that we did not lose even one. I understand Fervac-d has been
taken off th market, but I wonder if any vaccine at any dose will ever
be safe for these little guys. The reaction was severe, they were
projectile vomiting and diarrea, they all needed fluids, epis and
manual stimulation along with a person on each one watching every
little breath until we got through the worst of it. Talk about a
nightmare.....And these were perfectly healthy, no problem ferrets. If
one would have been sick like adrenal, we probably would have lost
it. If a half dose is a possibility, without reaction, but would cover
them, I would be all for it. There really needs to be some kind of
option out there if the full dose is so dangerous.
