Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: half dose distemper
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

In your case, it seems it wasn't the amount of vaccine given that
caused the reaction, but rather a bad batch of vaccine. In the past
3.5 years, we've had close to 300 ferrets vaccinated, and have only
had 2 reactions.

For our shelter ferrets with unknown vaccination history, our vet was
giving one full dose of distemper and a rabies vaccination. Some of
the ferrets that have been adopted from our shelter have gone back to
our vet a year later for their annual vet visit and vaccinations. Our
vet did a titer on these ferrets and found it to be very low,
therefore we are now giving all shelter ferrets two full vaccinations,
three weeks apart.

So my thought is that two half doses would not be enough. I am
curious to know what other vets' opinions are.
