Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Pathology lab wrong about lymphoma?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Glen,

So sorry your little one is unwell.

I would ask the path lab to send the samples out to another lab that
is experienced in ferrets. I had this done way back for one of
mine. The lab will have the slides and can send them out for you if
your vet requests it. If you are in the U.S. I would recommend
having them sent out to: Northwest Zoo Path. That is where mine were
sent even though I am in Canada. Link to that lab:

I am assuming the surgery done was to remove a lymph node for biopsy
and not an exploratory surgery? If the lymph node was biopsied as
opposed to a needle aspirate it is unlikely to be fat since the vet
would have taken the sample directly from the lymph node if not the
whole node.

You mention that the vet detected a heart murmur - was heart disease
confirmed with x-ray or ultrasound? That will be important to know
if you are considering another surgery.

Were his lungs x-rayed to see if there is a mass or fluid in the
lungs - or whether the coughing is heart related?

In terms of having his spleen removed - is it massive, impeding
things? One of mine underwent a splenectomy 10 days ago and had a
large tumor removed that was attached to the spleen. Fortunately, it
turned out to be benign. They can do very well without a spleen.

If he were mine, I'd have the slides checked by a ferret
knowledgeable lab and go from there. Confirm as well whether he has
heart disease via ultrasound or x-ray. If heart disease he needs to
be treated for that. It is possible that he has Juvenile Lymphoma,
which is extremely aggressive or many other things might be going on
and you really need to know for certain what you are dealing with
before you can realistically decide on a treatment course.
