Sometimes, and I just don't know why, ferrets seem to lose weight for seemingly no reason at all. We have a white Ferret who loses and gains weight as she sees fit to do so. The first time that she lost weight, we took her to the vet. She seemed to be eating and drinking OK, but she continued to lose weight. He said that she was fine, and did some blood work that also turned-out fine. Then after a few months Sandy began to put weight back on and she is currently as healthy as a horse. I have heard that yellowing of the fur on a white furred Ferret is caused by the type of food that the Ferret is being fed. The less expensive Ferret foods appear to cause this problem. As far as the shying and seeming fear is concerned, since she is a newcomer to your family, she is simply getting used to the new environment and everything else new...including you. Ferrets have a tendency to hide when they eat as well when they sleep or become unsettled for any reason. This appears to
be a security measure to guard their food, and to protect themselves from possible harm. The biting, unless the skin is broken, or if you can really feel it, is just their way of playing. I would suggest that you take your little lady to the vet for a rudimentary check-up just to be sure about the weight loss, and then giver her time to get used to things. Each Ferret does have a unique personality, and your new arrival will begin to show hers more fully as time goes by.
