Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] What would cause a gurgling sound?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

We had an old girl in the vet last Wednesday for something similar.
She has always made a funny grunting sound, and until now the vets
didn't think it was anything to be concerned about. The grunting
changed to gurgling, then after a couple of weeks, the gurgling
changed to gagging and choking. Initially, I thought there might have
been some kind of tissue interfering with the airway.

X-rays showed clear lungs and overall a pretty good/normal
presentation for an 8.5 year old ferret. She was sedated and a "ferret
endoscope" was fashioned using an otoscope with a very long otic cone
that allowed the vets to inspect her airway. No abnormal tissue was
found in the airway, but there was a very heavy accumulation of thick
mucous with pus in the trachea just beyond the larynx.

Baytril was prescribed and after three days all gurgling and gagging
subsided. We don't know what caused the infection. Perhaps her
advanced age made it difficult for her cilia to keep the mucous moving
out, causing the accumulation.
