Subject: [ferrethealth] please help
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
i have a 3 and 1/2 yr old albino ferret who is very ill and in the
animal hospital. He has been there for 2 1/2 days with really no
answers provided as to what could be the problem. The vet specializes
in exotic animals and has experience with ferrets. Rico ( my sick one)
started with diarrhea last wed and became dehydrated. Then hind leg
weakness set in and got progressively worse. The vet called today to
say that it is no better but has in fact now affected the right hind
leg. His blood values showed a signicant wbc of 35,000 with elelvated
liver enzymes and his fecal samples grew a significant amount of nasty
bacteria (they did not tell me what). The vet seems to think that it
is neorological but i want to disagree because the weakness began a
few days after rico started with diarrhea. I want to say it is
attributed to severe infection. They started him on antibiotics but
unfortunately, if you do not know what type of infection it is, then
you can not tell what type of antibiotic to use. Rico did lose quite a
bit of weight. Rico has not been eating hardly at all so with no
caloric intake weakness can develop. I know that dehydration can cause
sever weakness. They have not even sent the samples off yet to get a
definate answer on what type of bacteria it could be. Please if anyone
can provide an answer or advice for me i would be most appreciative. I
do not want to lose my rico! btw Rico started staggering but now is
dragging his hind legs!
