Hi Stehpanie,

Has your vet clarified with you why he suspects it is neurological?
Hind end weakness is common in ferrets who are ill no matter what the
illness is.

There must be other presenting clinical symptoms if he is thinking
neurological. I would ask your vet for clarification.

The good news is that he is stable, which means the treatment IS
working. It sounds like your vet may be suspecting a more serious
illness and you need to ask him what his suspicions are. Sometimes
medical professionals, vets included, are reluctant to give bad news
until they have a definitive diagnosis.

I think you can make it clear to him that you really would like to
know what the differential diagnoses might be. If, of course, that
is true. Most people are afraid of the unknown - if you have an idea
of what he is suspecting then you can be prepared for what sort of
care he will require.

Even in the worse case scenario there is hope if we consider that
hope does not have to mean hope for cure. For example, if it is
something like lymphoma you can be hopeful that there will be
supportive care offered to keep him comfortable and give him a good
quality of life in the time he has left. You can remain hopeful for
him becoming stable enough for you to be able to take him home.

At this stage it is still hopeful that he may not have a terminal
illness.

When ill a ferret can deteriorate very rapidly and that can be
scarey, however, he is stable and I think it is realistic to be
hopeful that with continued treatment he will continue to improve.
