Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: What would cause a gurgling sound? Update #2 Bad news
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Well it took a really long time this morning for Linus to stop trying
to vomit, (his body was doing this spasm vomit thing where his neck
skin wrinkled up and he'd hold his head out like puke was gonna come
up). He succeeded in throwing up a few more times, on the way to the
vet, in the waiting room and then on the examination table while DR.
X was watching. At first he thought he had eaten dry food too
quickly when he felt better last night (which we still think had a big
influence because he DID feel a lot better, no sounds at all last
night but he was lethargic), but then he did an x-ray and spotted a
mass near his esophagus and heart. :( Where it is, there is not
much we can do. He said in the position it is, they can't go through
the chest. He also has a huge yeast infection all throughout his GI
track.

Suffice it to say, I am devastated. I was talking to Yvonne on the
phone (from Fuzztek) and she spoke with Dr. X and she then got
back on the phone with me and said it doesn't sound good and he
doesn't have long. I was sobbing in the vets office. I felt
like my arms and legs were numb. I didn't realize it before now, but
I really don't want to put another animal to sleep, especially in a
vets office. When the time comes, can't the vet just give me a large
dose of pain medication to give him or something? So when the time
comes, he can die at home in his bed. I will ask Dr. Y
to come to
my house or find another vet that does office visits.

I was thinking of starting Essiac right away. He is scheduled for an
ultrasound tomorrow, hopefully, if they can find a ferret specialist
do the ultrasound/aspirate. So we don't know exactly what it is,
could be a mass, cyst, diverticul (sp?), but he said no matter what it
is there is little we can do. And he said Chemo doesn't work for
ferrets who have already been on Prednisolone for insulinoma (is this
true? never read this), and radiation would leave his lungs shot.
Also he said he detected a slight aspiration in his lungs.

We added another motility drug, and a yeast medicine to his arsenal,
and he is gonna eat soft food from now on and get fluids every 6 hours
while he is still vomitting. Dr. X said his vomitting might be
from the yeast/esophagitis rather than the mass. He doesn't know.

Now I have a question. When Linus first threw up, about two weeks
ago, it was 12 hours after he had gotten his Prednisolone upped. Is
this just pure coincidence? My heart tells me it is not. Dr. Y
wanted to put him on Proglyecm (sp?) if he kept having gas from the
Prednisolone. he even gave me a prescription for it. I really want
to switch him over to it. I HATE Pred and what it does to them. And
Dr. Y did a barium x-ray, wouldn't a mass have shown up on that???

Do you think there is anything we can do or try? On Friday when Dr.
Y gets back, if he thinks there is a chance, should I let him try to
do surgery on him or something? This is such a nightmare.

Please, remember that vets -- in this case 2 vets -- can not be
named on the FHL when discussing a case.]
