Hello Stephanie,
I am hoping that I can help a little. About three weeks ago I had a
little girl start giving me runny poop. It progressed into
dehydration, her not wanting to eat or drink, hind end weakness and
even low blood sugar. It has been a long three weeks, but I have hope
for you.
I took this little girl to an emergency vet, which had no clue about
ferrets, but Baby Girl needed fluids or she wasn't going to make it
through the night. I also had them check her blood sugar, which was
quite low and give her meds for that. In the morning I got Baby Girl
to our normal vet and who has lots of knowledge and experience.
It was decided that she had a BAD bacteria infection. The doc put her
on Baytrl (might have spelled that wrong). At first he was giving it
to her by a shot, then on day three started giving it to her orally.
He also was giving her sub-q fluids regularly and watching her blood
sugar and giving her meds for that. He ended up also putting her on
Pred. Three days after being at the vet, the doc had me come get her
and continue to nurse her at home. I will say that the only
improvement that I saw in the first week was that she was more alert.
Now the doc also thought of neurological problems because Baby Girl
was locking her back legs straight. She responded to pain, but just
would not bend her legs. The doc told me that I needed to keep
working with her.
Now three weeks later. She ate her first kibble two days ago. She's
been eating only chicken baby food (watered down). She still won't
drink plain water and I have been giving her very watered down baby
food as well as doing sub-q's when needed. She finished her
antibiotic on friday, but is still on pred. Her back legs,
well....one of her legs has become usable again. The other, she still
holds straight out.
Yesterday she started walking on the good back leg and using the bad
one as a kickrest.
Oh I forgot something. We also were having problems keeping her body
temp up in the begining. A pet heating pad was wonderful.
[Moderator's Note:
Remember that a heating bad used incorrectly can result in
burns so get guidance on this score from the veterinary staff]
So, we have no clue what was/is wrong with Baby Girl. Antibiotics,
pred, fluids, time, money and energy is making a diference though.
Please feel free to e-mail me personally if you have any questions.
Erin
