To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I am going through a similar experience right now. My ferret Blackie, who has adrenal
disease, insulinoma and diagnosed with Lymphoma about two months ago has been under
treatment with pred 0.3 cc 2x daily (5/15ml), and leukeran 0.25 every other day. He was
progressing nicely, his lymphocytes were down and his WCB and RBC were good. On
Monday morning i noticed he was not as hungry as usual and experiencing some hind-end
weakness. By monday night, he could no longer stand up but could only run in circles,
leaning to the left. As soon as he would stop running, he would fall over. He also would
not eat any of his daily soup, of which he has NEVER refused a day in his life.
I was at the vets office tuesday am when they opened. Xrays and full panel showed
nothing. The vet suspected one of 3 possibilities: An bad inner ear infection, a spinal
injury, or that lymphoma had spread to his spine. He started him on 0.25 baytril BID, kept
him on the 0.3 cc pred BID, added Omeprazole and a muscle relaxant (begins with a T)
TID. He has shown no signs of improvement since tuesday. I am returning to vets friday
evening. He is barely eating 15-20 cc's of gruel per sitting throughout the day and still
runs in circles until he is able to pee/poop. Then he gets put back into his little sleep sack
to rest again. The vet is very ferret knowledgeable. I am holding out hope that he will
show signs of improvement by tomorrow or Saturday. If not, I will consider a peaceful exit
for him on Monday.
Sukie, thanks for the info about the opiate..sound like it's worth a try too.
