Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Ferret with Lymphoma, and giving Prenisilone
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi Everyone....
I want to put something out to the group for suggestions....
My little Perla has a mind of her own. It is her way or the highway, and
this has been my experience with all female ferrets! She dose NOT want her
Prednisilone. I am beginning to worry if she is getting it or not.
With this ferret... you can not mix her meds in food. If you do, she
refuses to eat food. Even if I give it with a treat & follow with another
treat....the end result is that she no longer wants the treat (even ferretone).
So... you kind of just have to bite the bullet and just give it.
This is what she is doing.... She clenches her teeth down tight, and WILL
NOT open her mouth. No fight, just clenched. To reslove this... I have been
placing the syringe into the corner of her mouth...back under the cheek. I
squirt the med...and then rub under the chin to entice licking/swallow
reaction.
Her solution to this.... is to refuse to swallow when I rub under her chin.
So...she clenches, I place the syringe in the corner of the mouth in the
back under the cheek and squirt.
I try to rub under the chin to entice a swollow, and if she refuses.....
I then watch to make sure there is no spitting and no medication running
down the cheek before I put her back down. I have even gone as far as to then
rub the corner of the mouth w/my finger and then rub my finger on her gums.
Do you think I cam be certain that she is getting this med???
I have considered changing her to a long lasting injectable
steroid...however there is discrepancy as to how long it lasts and how well it works...so I
am saving this as our last resort.
Her vet had preferred not to compound the prednisilone because he wanted her
getting the full dose...however he said I can come back and he will add a
flavor....I know she will still clench...as she knows exactly which med I am
giving her and if she wants it or now. Her carafate she does not
mind....therefore..no clenching.
In my mind...her Pred. is her MOST important med. I want to be sure she is
getting it.
Does the group think with what I am doing....that she is??
Our update is that...
She to her vet yesterday and did have a slight fever...so she is on
antibiotics. If the limbs dont improve her pred/chemo will be adjusted and
increased. She can now make it to her litter box or little pad on her own (not sure
how she is doing this), but sometimes...no all the way back to her bed.
Worried mom in NJ,
