Subject: [ferrethealth] atonic bladder /bethanocol
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,

My vets believe that one of my DMK ferrets may have an atonic bladder.
I took Richie Rich with me to work in Jan, 09 because of urine
dribbling. The xray showed a huge bladder which was easily expressed.
There were no other apparent abnormalities. The urine appeared
normal but we didn't send out a UA. His appetite and activity level
is normal. We put him on oral baytril for 3 weeks. I took him back in
this week because although the dribbling had decreased somewhat, his
bladder was still huge. When I first got him in Oct 07, he had a
funny walk which I attributed to confinement. This gradually
improved, but now he walks but his rear legs do not elevate him all
the way. It also seems that he's lost some bowel control. My vets
decided to try him on Bethanocol and phenoxybenzamine. We are using
the cat dose as the formulary didn't contain a dose for ferrets. Has
anyone tried this or does anyone have any suggestions? I had it
compounded and it should be here by Monday. He still is active and
playful and I can manually express his bladder very easily.

Thank you,

Claudia
