Subject: [ferrethealth] Narrowing of the Esophagus
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Misha is approximately 5-6 years old and has had excellent health.
Recently, coinciding with a new food added to the mix, he started
vomiting occasionally. He vomited clear/white foam, which sometimes
had small bits of chewed kibble in it.

At first he did this sporadically so I was not overly concerned.
However in the last five days he has had four episodes which were
severe. He can vomit up to 30 minutes, still the same substance. His
nose and pawpads turn bright red and he sticks out his tongue, which
becomes strongly colored also. Last night his muzzle turned a bit blue.

Last Thursday, he did see the vet. She took barium radiographs of his
esophagus to rule out mega e. However the films showed a strange
narrowing in the middle of his esophagus, parallel to the heart. My
vet was concerned about a tumor being there and so she attempted an
ultrasound. However they could not get a clear enough image of the
area to make a diagnoses.

Since then I have switched Misha to powdered kibble mixed with water.
He has been free fed all his life. The main staple in is diet is EVO
kitten. Until I decided it might be good to mix another food in two
weeks ago, when this issue popped up. He is back on plain evo.

Misha has actually gained weight since his December vet visit. Outside
of these episodes, he acts perfectly normal and plays with the two
kits here. He doesn't tire when I take him for walks. There is also a
cat in the house. All are current on shots.

Any suggestions? I am wondering about either allergies to the new
food, or a piece of food injuring his esophagus and causes
inflammation. Or if anyone has seen a tumor in this location. If
wanted, I can find out the location of the films from my vet as she
has posted online also in her forums.

Thanks,

Margie
