Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Please help if possible, Bear now anemic
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I don't know about the numbers, I copied down what my vet wrote. And it sure
looks like % signs, but you know, I thought the same thing, when we were
talking, I didn't hear %, just numbers. I will ask him Monday. He does have
very pale gums. I will also ask about a transfusion, I was going to do that.
But my vet is very experienced, and seems to feel pretty sure this is
lymphoma. But I will do all I can. Thanks for the help.

I am sorry to hear about McKid. I only had a few thoughts. I am not sure
about your numbers for the anemia, Red cell counts are in numbers not percents.
If you are posting percents I am assuming you mean hematocrit, or PCV (
packed cell volume). If that is true, then 8 % is extremely low and if he has pale
gums, or paw pads, then it is likely true. Get him a transfusion now. I
don't even know if 8% is compatable with life, so it may be a false low, but even
if really 10 or 12% he needs a transfusion. So, if he doesn't have white
gums/and paw pads, then repeat it. If he does, ask about a transfusion- it won'
t be a cure but...
That will at least buy some time, if you saw possible blood in his stool,
that could be the cause of the anemia. Plus, I don't know about albon, but some
medications can cause bone marrow suppression. It may help to know his retic
count if he is making blood on his own or not.
The glucose may be from stress, I had a ferret with diabetes that was over
400 at time of diagnosis, an insulin level may help make a sure diagnosis. but
not necessary if no glucose in urine, perhaps worth getting a home meter to
check, especiallly now that he is on prednisone which may then lead to higher
glucose levels.
Once he is stable, you may want to consider the exploratory. But in the
meantime I am hoping he gets better.

Today b/c of how bad he was and the toppling over, we went back down
to vet. He is now anemic (gums looked good 2 weeks ago, but blood
test not done since end of Dec). Surgery cancelled. Dec. 23 red blood
cells were 52.7%, today 8.5%. Blood sugar also 304, but urine glucose
negative.
Why would he suddenly get anemic and develop high blood sugar at the
same time?
