Hi, first off.. I'm not a vet. I don't know if this is related, but this
is my experience with what I 'think' those sounds are.
2 of my 5 make wheezy noises from time to time. I was told once that it
could be the beginnings of blockage. So if I ever hear one of them making
those noises, I give ferret lax, and by the next day or day after... they're
not doing it anymore. This is giving them a couple of small doses a day,
depending on how much of this noise they make. And this has been for a few
years that I've dealt with it, so it 'seems' to work for whatever is going
on. And it doesn't happen often, and mostly around shedding time.
Now, over the past year my Tocho has 'dry heave' episodes. Vet doesn't know
what they are, I certainly don't. They don't happen a lot, or I would have
been posting here like crazy. But he will do this.. then go eat. Sometimes
he'll do it while he's eating, and once he stops... he'll go eat. I've seen
one of my others 'choke' on kibble a couple of times, and he does what
you're describing with the dry heaves, etc. I try to help him when this
happens, but I'm at a loss most of the time as to what to do since I don't
want to drive the piece of kibble into his lungs, etc. Now this ferret...
he doesn't chew very well most of the time. We've not gotten to the bottom
of that yet, but I'm thinking that could be part of his problem?
Since he does well on baby food, you could try soaking kibble in hot water,
then blending it once soft to make a soup or gravy. I do this for my Boo
Boo, the one who doesn't chew that well sometimes. Your little guy, if he
can handle the soupy soft stuff, may do well on kibble soup/gravy until the
vet or someone can figure out what's going on and address the situation.
I'm sure others will have input, too.
Best of luck with your little guy.
