Ferrets do bets with a lot of exercise so we have an
extremely well ferret-proofed room for their main
location BUT we also have an use a cage.
Our ferrets do NOT view their cage as a punishment.
It is comfortable and many nights they will put
themselves in ready for the night before Steve or I
even can do so.
We DO have them caged at certain times:
1. Night (Locally there have been two fires in the last
5 or so years. One was in a condo close to ours
thanks to a cut-rate furnace place doing a bad
installation but the location allowed it to mostly
burn itself out instead of spreading and the fire
dept. took care of the rest. The other took out two
condos and damaged two others due to a fireplace
improperly used. That was in a different building.
We also had a fume situation in our own condo but
that old furnace has been replaced. In every one of
those situations we had one or two ferrets put
themselves into locations where they were hard to
get -- really, really, really hard to the point where I
had to injure myself to get one one of the times.
Imagine if that had happened at night. So, we cage
them at night.
We also cage them at night to avoid accidental
injury, for example stepping on a ferret in the dark.
2. If we are away for an extended time such as a long
day trip.
3. If we are going to have a house guest who might
not be reliable with ferrets.
We do give times out in the cage, but it is fixed up so nicely
now that if we need to get across that we are very serious
we need to use a carrier for a short time for those.
Remember the importance of ferret-proofing carefully.
I don't have a copy of the current issue of _Ferrets for
Dummies_ (an excellent general book) because I could not
fit it into the budget but others will be able to tell you if
that has ferret proofing information. I suspect it does.
The FML (Ferret Mailing List) archives has a LOT on that
topic and I think there is a bit in the FHL Archives. Both
are easily used if a person simply tries and practices.
