My ferret Ianto, with confirmed insulinoma, has somewhat similar
symptoms, although I tend to see it when he has not eaten recently.
Generally it's soon after waking up. As you describe, his throat
contracts, but his abdomen isn't heaving as it would if he were really
trying to vomit. He produces clear foam and mucus pretty copiously,
but I have not seen food particles. His breath comes in ragged gasps.
His back legs are pretty much useless when this happens, and he paws
severely at his mouth, enough to scratch himself if I don't hold his
paws. His pawpads and nose turn red. We are able to stop these
episodes by applying watered-down Karo syrup to his gums and then
feeding some Nupro and kibble mush, so I feel pretty confident that
these episodes are related to low blood sugar. [and actually as I was
just typing this, my vet returned a call I had made about this, and
she agrees that this behavior is related to low blood sugar, so we are
increasing Ianto's prednisone dosage] Since you mentioned nodules on
the pancreas, I wonder if you have looked into the possibility of
insulinoma--if you've already mentioned this I apologize, I don't
remember reading it.
You have my sympathy, this is traumatic to see your ferret experiencing.
Regards,
Regina
