Subject: [ferrethealth] post surgery care after nephroectomy
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
My male ferret 3 years old had his left kidney removed on the 19th of Feb.
He came through surgery just fine and no other abnormalities were noted. He
was able to come home Thursday evening (the 19th) He has a great appetite,
duck soup only, and was drinking really well on his own. Now the cold water
bothers him so I offer him room temp water. He will drink some but not much.
I do water down the duck soup so he is getting water that way too. It also
has soften kibble in it, baby food, and chicken. He is taking carafate,
amoxi-drops, and tramadol. The following day of surgery he pulled about half
his stitches out, so we rushed him to my vet, they used tissue glue and
staples to re-enforce the incision line. After using the tissue glue his
skin had a reaction and was very red with irritation. We used neosporin
several times through out the day to help. The redness has finally gone down
today. I have allowed him to walk around some so and he does fine. He is
peeing just fine, actually a lot, and his poos look good.
I am not sure what to expect and how long this recovery will last. The first
couple of days he was very sore and in discomfort so we increased the pain
meds to help him relax and rest. At first his belly was extremily tender to
the touch all over, now its just the incision line.
He gets worn out easy from his short walk around, which I am sure is to be
expected.
Has anyone else had this type of surgery and give me some ideas of what to
expect and how long the recovery process will take?
