Subject: [ferrethealth] possible liver shunt
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a 9 month old albino boy with varying ataxia,
balance issues. A neurology resident at the vet. hospital
I work at examined him today and ruled out vestibular
disease. A couple of weeks ago he had an episode of
acute ataxia I thought was maybe trauma but radiographs
showed nothing (good rads, reviewed by radiologist and
boarded neurologist showed no disk disease or orthopedic
issue).

Bloodwork is normal (both CBC and chem).

So, the neurologist's thinking is metabolic, of which #1
rule out is liver shunt. 'Amos' lives with 4 other ferrets
who are fine, and is on a good nutritional plane.

I'd like to hear from anyone with experience of
portosystemic shunt in ferrets or other
metabolic disease which can appear like PSS.
There's no likelihood of toxin exposure.

I'd like to do bile acids and ammonia tests but need
some reference ranges.

Am aware arginine deficiency can manifest as hepatic
encephalopathy but given his diet this isn't possible.

Any thoughts?

thanks,
Skyla
