Hi Ella,
Sampson gets a very red penis when he's had one of his recurring UTIs
or sometimes when he's passed uroliths (sort of go hand-in-hand).
Its actually caused by him licking himself because the area feels
irritated. And it can turn quite red within hours. Its possible he
has developed a urinary tract infection (UTI).
Have you noticed if he's having trouble urinating? Any straining?
Do you have any test strips so you can check if there's blood in the
urine?
It would be an emergency if he is unable to pee and then he does need
to go to the Emergency clinic, otherwise it probably can wait until
your vet can check it out.
I have an antibiotic cream my vet gave me to put on his penis when it
gets red like that and its something that won't hurt him if he licks
it off. It is one that is normally used in human burn victims -
Flamazine. Perhaps you can pick some up - you do need a prescription
but it works fantastically.
