Did you mean adrenal disease? Addison's is not normally found in
ferrets except in ferrets who have had both adrenals removed at the
same time.

**This is very incorrect, and unfortunately, this opinion has led to the
death of many ferrets after removal of only one adrenal gland. It is very
possible for a ferret with one hyperactive gland to have the other gland be
suppressed and therefore not functioning. When the hyperactive gland is removed, the
ferret is functionally Addisonian, despite still having one adrenal gland.
This is often a temporary condition, as the remaining adrenal will usually start
to function normally after a period of time, but if the deficiency is not
treated with supplementation during that time, the ferret will die. Also, a
ferret that has had one gland removed in the past will develop Addison's disease
after removal of the second gland at a later date.

Prednisone alone is not enough to treat Addison's diease, although it will
help. A ferret that has Addison's disease needs supplementation with florinef
or percorten.

Symptoms include lethargy, increased (or sometimes decreased)
thirst/urination, anorexia, weakness, dehydration, coma, seizures, death. Any ferret
exhibiting any of these signs shortly after an adrenal surgery, even if only one
adrenal was removed, needs to be evaluated for possible Addison's asap, as
progression to death can be rapid.

For AFA members, the latest volume of the American Ferret Report contains an
article I wrote of Addison's disease. The issue should be available to
non-members as well.
