Hi Cheryl,
When my ferret Sampson was diagnosed with insulinoma my vet did not
want him on pred because of his recurring numerous infections. Instead
he put him on diazoxide even though diazoxide is not generally
considered as primary treatment for insulinoma but as an adjunct to
prednisolone. HOWEVER, Sampson gets his BG checked regularly and so
far the diazoxide on its own, has been managing his insulinoma very
well. Granted from what I've been told - he is an anomaly.
He only had one crash and that was right after his splenectomy, when he
was taken off IV fluids however, by the next day his BG level was
normal again.
Now it may be different if you are switching him from pred to
diazoxide, I don't have any experience with that. But did want to give
you an example of someone for whom diazoxide alone has worked.
