Subject: [ferrethealth] Update on Linus/Megaesophagus
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Linus is doing very poorly today with his condition. In the morning
he was OK, but I guess we over did it with the food and he
regurgitated a couple of times (actually this time it looked more like
it had stomach acid in it also), but then he would not doing the thing
where he scrunches up all his neck and face muscles in spasm. He did
this intermittently for 9 hours. I brought him to the vet when I got
home from internship and realized he was still doing this, and we gave
him a shot of Cerenia (antiu-nausea/emetic)which seemed to help him be
able to eat well for a couple of days over the weekend.

Well he has just been exhausted in the hours since we have gotten
home. I tried to give him Carafate and he refused which is very
unlike him. He was also unrousable until I put a finger of baby food
near his nose, and then he charged up and was licking for a while. I
probably did this about 20 times, couldn't have been much at all,
before he started the spasms again. I don't think he will be around
very much longer if this is how its gonna go. He hasn't held much
down in 36 hours.

I am really dissapointed he started wretching again because that did
not happen the previous time he got Cerenia. We changed some of his
meds too, he is only gonna get Depo Medrol from now on and we are
going to taper the Diflucan (anti-yeast) down.

I feel like we are missing a piece of the puzzle here. He definetly
regurgitated everything he ate within 20 minutes of swallowing it, so
why did he wretch and spasm for so much longer? Also his stomach does
a weird thing to, its like you can see his abdomen do somethings,
maybe trying to help him get stuff up? And he hasn't been pooping
much either- is this because of lack of food or else WHAT IS GOING ON.
I hate how no matter how many vets we have seen there are no clear
answers or solutions.

Maybe I should have a endoscopy done to see what is going on. Or, me
and our longtime vet were talking about 'what ifs' and he said as a
last resort, before we decide to do euthanasia, he wants to try
putting a tube down his esophagus to his stomach. He said they do
this on dogs and cats. The tube would basically be his 'new'
esophagus...has anyone remotely heard of this, at least in other
species? Maybe it is worth a try before putting him down, which is
frighteningly starting to seem like it is closer than we thought.
