Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: laser rather than cryo
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I just learned some more.

Several people have written with varying cryo experiences, and Dr. Dan Johnson, who uses
the Brymill unit wrote. This article is recommended for information:
Dan Johnson, Clinical Use of Cryosurgery for Ferret Adrenal Gland Removal, Exotic DVM
2002;4(3):71‑71

He also said that cryo is usually reserved for the worst tumors after the debulking so the
very nature of the tumors -- rather than the procedure -- can make some of those types
more likely to regrow. That makes sense. I personally suspect that is why the death rate is
higher with cases where cryo was used, too (kind of like the way that certain excellent
surgeons have higher death rates simply because they tackle the hardest cases that most
surgeons can't do, so their patients were already far more compromised than the standard
patients going into surgery).

He also said that he is willing to hear from vets who are interested, so any vets here may
contact me for his address.
