Subject: [ferrethealth] Essiac vs. Pau d Arco
To: fhl <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I have never prepared Essiac myself. If we had one with lymphoma at
this time I probably WOULD give it as well as other meds. There are
some herbal things I use and others that I do not.

What I do know is that there are several FHL vets who speak well of it
IN CONJUNCTION WITH TYPICAL THERAPIES.

I also know that there are several FHL vets who speak of scary side
effects such as glucose level lowering from Pau d Arco but not from
Essiac. (Hey, maybe Pau d Arco might be useful as an additional thing
in conjunction with insulin if diabetes is present just as Brewers
Yeast can be due to glucose level lowering?)
For links to such vet comments see the very easily used FHL Archives:

The third thing that I know is that lymphoma can NOT be diagnosed from
high white counts and nodes that are up, or from either alone because
infections can also cause those. Blood tests and observation are NOT
sufficient for diagnosis. Suspicion, yes, diagnosis, no.

The fourth is that there are no cure-alls.

According to
http://www.essiacinfo.org/essiac.html
that herbal formulation is
Burdock root (Arctium lappa)
(This is said in some things to be high in chromium so a lot of it
might lower blood sugar -- warning if there is insulinoma.)
Slippery Elm inner bark (Ulmus fulva)
Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella)
and
Indian Rubarb root (Rheum officinale)

Important notes: some parts of standard rhubarb are highly poisonous
so if anyone is considering a substitution from name CHECK first to
make sure if the plants are even related and which parts are poisonous.

Always look up the downsides of any herbs given to ferrets as well as
the upsides, including these since i lack time to do it now. In
general, pretty much anything that is strong enough to heal is strong
enough to harm so you need to know what medical conditions make any
med -- including herbals ones -- poor choices, what species should
have certain drugs including plants ( http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/
), what medicines they can not be given with, side effects
(including which are serious and which usually are not), etc.
